Lower School had an amazing Nature Day on Friday 11th June 2010. We were very lucky to have 4 visitors from the New Forest Centre and The Forestry Commission who ran 4 different activities for the children.
These activities were:
1. Survey
2. Birds and ground nesting birds
3. Habitats in the New Forest
4. Trees and the job of a Ranger
These quote from the children:
“I learnt that some birds build their nests on the ground, they are called ground nesting birds.” Jonathan Year 4
“I learnt that deer lose their antlers in winter instead of keeping them forever and they grow new ones in spring.” Jacob Year 3
“I enjoyed making birds with tissue paper and then going outside and making nests. I also tried eating like a bird.” Hannah Year 3
“I learn the names of different plants e.g. clovers, sheep sorrel. I really learnt a lot and caught lots of bugs” Kirstie Year 4
“I learnt that the Forestry Commission had different people to do different jobs e.g. a ranger to shoot the deer to keep the numbers down.” Lucy Year 4
“I learnt that only male deer have antlers not females.” Jennifer Year 4
“The pigs are not normally allowed out in the forest but are allowed out in Autumn because they eat the acorns. The horses and cows are allergic to the acorns so they can’t eat them.” Dylan Year 3
I learnt that a Lapwing pretends that she has broken her wing and the predator thinks that she will be an easy catch.” Olivia Year 4
“I liked the bit when we caught a spider who was carrying its babies on it’s back.” Bradly Year 4
“I learnt that there were 10,000 bugs without a backbone in the New Forest.” Kian Year 3
“I learnt that when you cut down a tree how many rings they have is how old the tree is.” Lauren Year 4
“I enjoyed catching the bugs because I caught a damselfly and I had never seen one before.” Amy Year 3
“I learnt who eats who!” Roger Year 3 |
