Garden Club – Has recently been re-launched with the new name of “Bugs and Grubs Club”. As with most clubs, we do need the help of some green fingered parents. If you feel you could spare a little time please do come and see us in the office. Many thanks.
The Gardening Club started in 2001 offering lower school children the opportunity to become involved in school grounds projects.
It is a fun club which takes the children through autumn, winter, spring and summer projects.
Garden club offers children the opportunity to learn safe gardening skills and gain practical knowledge about their environment.
Our initial brief was to help maintain the Quiet Area in School and we discovered early on that Marchwood Junior Gardeners are very keen!
They demonstrated that they are extremely capable, practical and most definitely not ‘fair-weather gardeners’ and since then our areas have extended to work in The Maze (in the glades), Garden Plots and the recently developed Science Garden.
One particular aspect Junior Gardeners have shown is a real interest in, is sowing and growing their own fruit and vegetables.
Strawberries have been a popular choice at MJS and last year seed potatoes were planted resulting a great crop of spuds in October harvested by this year’s new gardeners!
As our young gardeners have moved to Upper School some have expressed an interest to continue with gardening and as a result, last year, we introduced an Upper School gardening session mainly to focus on particular projects such as refreshing paths, repairing fences, making wooden planters and being involved in one favourite aspect of the club composting, recycling and reusing!

They made a brilliant job of building two compost bins from pallets which the school stationery was delivered on!! |

Wooden planter built by Upper School Gardeners and then planted up with summer plants for the School entrance! |

Garden Club runs weekly during lunchtime and is supervised by parents. In order to give as many Lower School children as possible the chance to be involved within the School Grounds (and there are quite a few different Gardens areas now!), this year Garden Club runs for a four week period.
We welcome any extra pairs of hands in order to be able to offer more children the opportunity to get involved in Garden Club.
If you would like to help, even for the weeks your child participates, that would be fine, your company would be welcomed! (Grand parents most welcome as well) - you do not have to be a gardener, just being prepared to ‘muck in’ is ideal!
