During recent months, the children of Marchwood Junior School have been kept up to date with the progress of the Community Plan. They are aware of the main issues that have been raised and are keen to be involved in helping to do something practical about some of the concerns that have been highlighted.
One such concern was the smell which frequently emanates from the Water Treatment Plant and which lingers over Marchwood, sometimes spoiling an otherwise lovely day in the park, the garden or indeed on the school field.
Without further ado, 50 Year 6 children each wrote an individual letter to the Manager of the local plant strongly voicing their views. Within a couple of weeks, not only did each child receive a personal written reply but also the offer of a visit from Jim Thomas, Southern Water’s Area Manager.
Mr Thomas was invited to school and gave a detailed presentation to the children about the water treatment process and how the local plant was working hard to reduce the bad smells.
(During his visit, Mr Thomas also addressed the school’s ‘Green Team’ and encouraged them to continue to look at ways of conserving water and monitoring its use at school and at home).
The children were pleased to have been given the chance to hear what Mr Thomas had to say and were impressed by the work that Southern Water was doing to reduce the smells …..but they will keep their noses to the wind this summer and will no doubt ask Mr Thomas to pay a return visit if things do not improve!
