| Marchwood Junior School Parent Teacher Association is a very active and enthusiastic body composed of parents and staff members, with Steve Bassett, the head teacher as President. In recent years we have been able to support the school in many ways (and not always financially).
Parents who have spare time during school hours are often asked to help. This may mean lending a hand in the classroom, supervising the library, helping with craft or talking to children about a hobby, interest or expertise which helps them with their studies.
If you can help please let your child’s teacher know or contact the Headteacher.
Many members of the PTA come into school to help with special events and we also run the book fairs and school uniform shop. We hold a variety of events to raise funds and we are very well supported by the school staff, the children and the parents, and also the wider local community.
Our main fundraising event of the year is the Christmas Fayre when we are lucky enough to have Father Christmas on site for our younger visitors and carols and mulled wine for the slightly older generation! We raise in excess of £2,000 at this event and we are always grateful for the support we receive. Throughout the school year we also run discos, a film night and a firework display which is a community event held in conjunction with the Infant School PTA. In the past we have staged fashion shows and in the future hope to hold another of these together with a quiz night for the adults and a family barn dance. We are keen to try new ideas, and have recently been involved in the selling of garden bulbs.
As everyone is no doubt aware schools find it difficult to fund many of the special events and trips that they would like to and this is where we are able to help. In the recent past we have helped to fund the relocation of the ICT suite, purchased the netball team’s kit, and also purchased data logging equipment for use in the science curriculum.
Recently we have had the opportunity to help to fund several special events at school: we provided the money to purchase materials for Art Day, paid for the visit of a musician for World Music Day and funded one of the Architectural Workshop days. At present there is a display of original art in school on loan from Southampton Art Gallery and we were able to ensure that this was available by agreeing to fund this new initiative. Whilst we are continuing to fund these smaller projects we are also saving in order to help with the relocation and refurbishment of the school library, a large project that will benefit the whole school. |
